YouTube is a website where you can watch millions of videos on almost any subject, including clips from films and TV.

YouTube is the second most used search engine in the world, after Google. How-to videos, where someone shows you how to do something, can replace long printed manuals. You can pause, rewind or skip ahead whenever you like, so they are easy to follow. You can learn how to connect a new TV, learn a language, dance the tango or brew beer. You can also rewatch entertaining clips from TV programmes.

How to get YouTube on your smartphone

  1. Open My apps on your Doro smartphone. The YouTube app is already installed. On other phones, you may need to download the YouTube app from the Play Store or App Store first.
  2. Tap Google to see the apps that belong to Google, including YouTube.
  3. Tap the YouTube icon. It looks like a red and white “play” button.
  4. Log in with the same email address and password that you use for Gmail.

If you do not have a Gmail account, you can create one in the YouTube app. You can also create one in the Gmail app, which you will find among the Google apps. Its icon is a red and white envelope.

The menu

The red bar at the top of the screen has four icons:

  • House (Home): This tab opens when you start YouTube. It shows videos recommended for you, based on what you have watched before.
  • Fire (Trending): The most popular clips among viewers right now. The list changes as new videos are added or become more popular.
  • Rectangular play button (Subscriptions): Videos from the channels you subscribe to.
  • Person (Account): Your viewing history, any videos you have uploaded and the clips you have saved to watch later.

To get back to the menu while a video is playing, hold the phone upright and tap the centre of the video. A few small icons appear briefly. Tap the “v” (down arrow) in the top left corner to return to the home screen, where the red menu bar appears again.

Search for videos

On YouTube you will find performances, how-to videos, news reports and funny TV clips, and it is easy to lose track of time. Many videos are entertaining, and some are hard to believe. Some are made by businesses or professionals, but many are made by ordinary people who want to share what they know.

If you are comfortable with English, search in English to find more results. Otherwise, search in your own language to find clips in that language.

How to search

  1. Tap the magnifying glass in the top right corner. The keyboard appears.
  2. Type what you are looking for, or tap one of your previous searches below the search field to repeat it.
  3. As you type, YouTube suggests complete searches. For example, if you type “How to knit”, you may see “How to knit a scarf”.
  4. Keep your search short, because every word affects the results. “Knit scarf” works better than “I want to learn how to knit a scarf”.
  5. Tap a video that looks right.

When you hold the phone upright, the video plays at the top of the screen, with a description and a list of similar clips below it. Turn the phone on its side (landscape mode) to make the video fill the whole screen.

Watch later

You can save a video to watch later.

  1. Tap a video so that it starts playing.
  2. Tap the centre of the video. A few icons appear briefly.
  3. Tap the icon at the top of the screen that shows three horizontal bars and a plus sign.
  4. Tap Add to Watch Later.

To find the video again, tap the person icon on the right of the menu bar. Your saved video is under the Account tab.

Subscribe to channels

Every video is posted on a channel that belongs to a person or an organisation. If you subscribe to a channel you like, you are told when it posts new videos. It could be a channel with exercise videos, language lessons or your favourite comedian.

Doro posts tutorials on its own channel. Search for “doromedia” to find it.

How to subscribe to a channel

  1. Play a video with the phone held upright. Below the video you will see its title and number of views, followed by the name of the channel that posted it.
  2. Tap SUBSCRIBE next to the channel name.

The channel and its latest videos now appear under the Subscriptions tab.

Ads

Sometimes a video does not start straight away, because one or more adverts play first. You can usually tap Skip ad after a few seconds.

Some adverts appear in a small box over the video. To close one, tap the small “X” in the top right corner of the box.
